About us

Our mission is simple: free, honest skin care education for everyone

The Pathway to Progress is a nonprofit organisation. We exist so that anyone, anywhere, can understand their skin and care for it safely, without being pressured, shamed or misled.

Mission statement

The Pathway to Progress provides free, evidence-based education on natural and gentle care for acne, dark spots and other common skin conditions, so that people of every skin tone and income can make safe, informed decisions about their skin and know when to seek professional care.

We do this through plain-language guides, an honest ingredient library, and a free weekly tips service delivered by email. Everything we publish is free, and our guides describe ingredients rather than brands.

We are an education NGO, not a healthcare provider. We do not run clinics, see patients, diagnose, prescribe, or sell or dispense treatments; when someone needs care, we point them to a pharmacist, doctor or dermatologist.

The problem we are working on

Skin conditions are among the most common reasons people search for health information, and acne, eczema and hyperpigmentation touch almost every family. Yet the advice people find is often one of two things: a sales page dressed up as education, or a medical article too dense to act on. People with brown and Black skin face an extra gap, because mainstream guidance frequently ignores how conditions look and behave on darker skin, and the harm that harsh or unregulated products can do to it.

The result is predictable. People try lemon juice and toothpaste, buy unregulated lightening creams, scrub inflamed skin raw, or give up and assume nothing will help. We believe clear, trustworthy education prevents a great deal of that harm.

What we do

Free guides
In-depth, plain-English guides to acne, dark spots, eczema, oily and sensitive skin, scars, sun protection and more. Every remedy is labelled by the strength of its evidence, and every guide explains when to see a professional. Browse the guides.
The ingredient library
Honest entries on natural and naturally derived skin care ingredients: what they are, what the research shows, how people use them and who should avoid them. Open the library.
Free weekly tips
A short, evidence-based tip each week, delivered by email, so good habits become easy to keep. Join the list.
Signposting to care
Clear guidance on the warning signs that need a doctor, what to expect at a dermatology appointment, and how to find affordable care. When to see a dermatologist.

Who we serve

Adults and parents of teenagers who want to manage everyday skin problems with gentle, affordable approaches first; people who have been let down by products that over-promised; and communities, particularly those with melanin-rich skin, that are poorly served by mainstream skin care advice. Our content is written for a general reader with no medical background.

Our principles

  • Evidence over enthusiasm. We grade the research behind every remedy and say plainly when something is unproven.
  • Safety. "Natural" is not a safety claim. Every guide covers dilution, patch testing, sun sensitivity and who should avoid an ingredient.
  • Inclusion. Skin of colour is central to our writing, not a footnote.
  • Humility. We are educators, not your doctor. We say so often, and we send people to professionals when that is the right thing to do.
